May 2012 Updates

May 31, 2012

Today I’m happy to talk about a couple improvements to Iron Money.

First, numerous speed improvements have been made throughout the entire site. The most significant improvement has been on the “Summary” page, which is about twice as fast; most pages that have a table of transactions are faster as well (even with hundreds of transactions).

Second, the Summary page now displays a list of upcoming transactions. You can quickly view recurring transactions that are coming up in the future.

Introducing Automatic Updating

April 30, 2012

Today I’m excited to introduce automatic updating for Iron Money!

For years, Iron Money has allowed you to manually import CSV, OFX (Microsoft Money), and QIF (Quicken) files to update an account with new transactions and balances. Now, accounts from hundreds of banks can be updated automatically. Simply enter the username and password you use to sign into your bank, and Iron Money will securely store your credentials and connect to your bank to update your accounts.

Iron Money will automatically clean the transaction names and categorize your transactions. If you’ve manually added a transaction (including recurring transactions that are automatically added), Iron Money will automatically merge the bank’s transaction with your manual entry.

Iron Money automatically updates accounts multiple times throughout the day. Banks sometimes take their online download services down, so if it’s not able to update your accounts for more than a few days, it’ll automatically notify you. You never have to tell Iron Money to update your accounts, and you don’t need to worry about minor hiccups when a bank becomes unavailable.

Iron Money for Mac 1.2.0

March 21, 2012

Iron Money for Mac 1.2.0 is now available in the Mac App Store! Amongst many new features and bug fixes, this update introduces support for recurring transactions, file storage, and notifications.

Recurring transactions allow you to add a transaction that automatically repeats over a period of time. With recurring transactions, you simply add a transaction and set it to repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly. It can repeat forever, or you can set it to stop on a particular day or after a certain number of times. Iron Money can automatically add your transactions, but you can also manually add the transactions and simply use recurring transactions to remind yourself that a transaction is coming up. Iron Money makes it easy to see what recurring transactions are coming up, and you can easily add the transaction before or after its date. Additionally, you can easily skip an occurrence if you don’t need to add it.

File storage is really handy for keeping track of bills, checks, receipts, and any other documents related to your personal finances. You can attach a file to any account, category, or transaction. Additionally, since the files are stored with IronMoney.com, you can easily access them from wherever you have an Internet connection. Everyone has 20 MB of free storage, and you can easily upgrade to 1 GB of storage for $9.99/year (about 1000 files for less than a dollar a month) when you need more storage space.

Notifications can let you know when something notable occurs, such as a recurring transaction being added or an account balance going below a certain amount. The Notifications view shows all of your notifications and will show how many unread notifications you have.

Additionally, there are a lot of other new features, including:

  • Entering transfers has been made even easier.
  • A transaction’s description and time is now displayed in the transaction tables.
  • Improved syncing.
  • Bug fixes.

Introducing Automatic Categorization

February 29, 2012

Today I’m excited to talk about a major improvement to importing data into Iron Money.

Iron Money allows you to import CSV, OFX (Microsoft Money), and QIF (Quicken) files into an account. Iron Money already automatically cleans the transaction names in the file, and now it can use the transaction data in the file to automatically assign new transactions to existing categories.

Similar to how transaction names are automatically cleaned, Iron Money does not depend on exact matches for automatic categorization. Many transaction names originally have numeric data in them related to the transaction (e.g. TARGET 00001958 for Target); these numbers often change from transaction to transaction. Iron Money is intelligent enough to look at each word in a transaction name and make its best guess based on those words, which leads to better guesses and less work for you.

Introducing Recurring Transaction Notifications

January 31, 2012

Today I’m excited to introduce recurring transaction notifications for Iron Money!

Recurring transactions allow you to add a transaction that automatically repeats on a schedule, such as every week or every few months. You can now receive notifications before, when, and after a recurring transaction is added or expected to be added.

For example, if you create a monthly recurring transaction for your credit card bill, you can tell Iron Money to notify you one week before your bill is due. You can also receive notifications when a recurring transaction occurs (which is handy when you have a recurring transaction that is automatically added and you’d like a reminder that it was added, or when you have a recurring transaction that is not added automatically and you need to handle it manually). You can even receive a notification after a recurring transaction has occurred; this is useful when you have something to do sometime after the recurring transaction occurs (e.g. check to make sure a regular payment was received).

Introducing Notifications

December 31, 2011

Today I’m very excited to introduce notifications for Iron Money! You can now receive notifications when notable events occur in Iron Money.

Account balance notifications can be sent when your account balances are below a certain amount or reach a certain amount. These notifications are specific to each account, so you can have a different amounts for your checking account, your credit card account, etc.

In conjunction with the new file storage feature, Iron Money will notify you when you are running low on storage space. Since Iron Money will let you know when you need to buy more storage space, you don’t have to worry about suddenly running out of space when it’s most unexpected.

The new Notifications tab on IronMoney.com shows all of your notifications and will have a red notification badge when you have new notifications. You can also receive unread notifications via email. New users have this option automatically enabled when you confirm your email address, but existing users will need to manually enable this under the Settings tab.

Both Iron Money for iOS and Iron Money for Mac will be updated in the coming months to support notifications. Join the tens of thousands of others that have signed up for Iron Money and let me know if you have any feedback!

Introducing File Storage

November 30, 2011

Today I’m very excited to introduce file storage for Iron Money! You can now attach files to accounts, categories, transactions, and uploads.

File storage is really handy for keeping track of bills, checks, receipts, and any other documents related to your personal finances. There are many ways in which this is useful:

  • When you make a purchase, you might want to save a photo of the receipt with the transaction, or attach a PDF of the receipt if you made the purchase online. This is really handy for returning items and tax purposes.
  • You can attach scanned checks to their respective transactions.
  • Bank statements can be attached to your accounts.
  • You might want to attach expense reports to your categories.
  • Account uploads automatically store the uploaded file so you don’t have to keep a copy on your computer.

Your files are encrypted and stored in multiple locations, so they are much more safe than they are on your own computer. Additionally, since they are stored with IronMoney.com, you can easily access them from wherever you have an Internet connection.

Everyone has 20 MB of free storage, which is great for storing account uploads and attaching a couple of files to your accounts, categories, and/or transactions. You can easily upgrade to 1 GB of storage for $9.99/year (about 1000 files for less than a dollar a month) when you need more storage space.

You can start adding files right now! Both Iron Money for iOS and Iron Money for Mac will be updated in the coming months to support file storage. Join the tens of thousands of others that have signed up for Iron Money and let me know if you have any feedback!
