Introducing Transaction Search

By Chasen Le Hara

Today I’m delighted to introduce transaction searching! You can now search through your transactions by minimum and maximum amounts, dates/times, accounts, categories, the “cleared” status, and text!

The text search looks through your transaction names, transaction descriptions, and split descriptions to find results. It supports some basic “operators” like AND and OR. For example, to find transactions with either “Amazon” or “Netflix”, you can search for amazon OR netflix. The search is case insensitive, so you don’t have to worry about uppercasing the correct letters. By default, Iron Money will check for all of the words in your transaction search; a search for Apple iTunes is the same as Apple AND iTunes.

Iron Money also supports quotes in your text searches! You can wrap an exact phrase in quotes to look for exact matches. For example, say you have a transaction called “Online Transfer from Savings.” A search for “online transfer” would match the transaction, while a search for “transfer online” would not match the transaction.

There’s one more thing: Iron Money supports searching for transactions that don’t have a specific word or phrase. For example, you can search for transactions that do not have the word “transfer” by searching for “-transfer.” Similarly, you can search for transactions that don’t match a phrase; a search for “-”online transfer”” will look for transactions without the phrase “online transfer” (but would return transactions with just online or just transfer).

Searching through your transactions can make staying on top of your personal finances easier, especially near tax time. Sign up for Iron Money today and start using its powerful search feature, and let me know if you have any feedback!
